Create design onlineAbout Sulphur Flower
Sulphur flower, also called sulphur buckwheat, is a low, spreading western perennial with leathery basal foliage and clusters of small yellow flowers. The blooms open from reddish buds in summer and may continue into fall, then dry to rusty tones. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/eriogonum-umbellatum/common-name/sulphur-eriogonum/) describes a 6–12 inch flowering height and 12–36 inch spread; [Oregon State Extension](https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/em-9490-eriogonum-umbellatum-sulphur-flower-buckwheat) notes that size and form vary across this species.
### Garden Use
Use it as a low groundcover in a sunny rock garden, dry border, or slope. Its spreading mat, yellow flower clusters, and late-season color suit open planting where neighboring plants will not crowd its crown.
### Growing Conditions
Provide full sun and sharply drained sandy or loamy soil. It tolerates dry conditions after establishment, while persistently wet soil can cause failure. The species profile lists USDA zones 4–8; select a locally appropriate source if planting outside that range.
## Maintenance
Leave the flower heads to dry for seasonal color or remove stalks when they no longer look attractive. Its long taproot makes mature plants difficult to divide or transplant.
