About Blue Hobbit Sea Holly

Blue Hobbit is a compact selection of blue sea holly, with a basal clump and upright branched stems carrying blue flower heads in summer and early autumn. The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/248909/eryngium-planum-blue-hobbit/details) describes it as about 30 cm tall and lists full sun and well-drained soil. [Missouri Botanical Garden](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderProfileResults.aspx?basic=Eryngium+planum) lists this cultivar for USDA zones 4–8. ### Garden Use Use Blue Hobbit near the front of a sunny border or in a gravel garden where its sculptural flower heads can be appreciated. The compact clump is smaller than many *Eryngium planum* selections, while the spiny bracts and silvery blue-green leaves still provide a strong textural accent. ### Growing Conditions Choose full sun and well-drained loam or sand. The RHS gives a broad 10–50 cm maximum spread range; the current 0.3 m width point lies within that range, so it is retained while the label reflects the published range. Allow the soil to drain freely between watering. ## Maintenance Tidy plants after flowering and leave any heads that add late-season structure. Wear gloves when handling the spiny foliage and bracts.
