Bird of paradise bush is an open, spreading woody shrub or small tree with fernlike foliage and yellow flowers framed by long red stamens. NC State Extension gives a mature height of 6–8 feet and spread of 4–6 feet, with flowers in spring, summer, and fall; its [plant profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/erythrostemon-gilliesii/common-name/bird-of-paradise-bush/) also records attraction to butterflies and hummingbirds.
## Siting
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. The upright, irregularly rounded form works as a flowering accent where its mature width can be accommodated. NC State lists USDA hardiness zones 8a–11b and notes the species has naturalized in parts of the southwestern United States, so consider local planting guidance where it may spread.
## Watering
Deep, less frequent watering encourages a deeper root system; allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Growth and flowering still depend on adequate sunshine and rainfall. The [Cambridge University Botanic Garden account](https://www.botanic.cam.ac.uk/the-garden/plant-list/caesalpinia-gilliesii/) describes the species as borderline hardy and notes that it may need a sheltered position or winter protection in cooler climates.
## Maintenance
Prune selectively to shape the plant and avoid shearing, which NC State says can delay recovery. Keep seed pods away from children and pets because ingestion can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.
