About Torch Ginger

Torch ginger (*Etlingera elatior*) is a large, rhizomatous tropical perennial grown for its upright clumps and bold pink-red flower heads. Its leafy shoots can reach about 2–6 m, and the showy heads rise from separate stalks above the foliage ([Singapore NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/1/9/1990)). ## Garden Use Give this ginger a spacious position in a warm, humid garden, or grow it in a large container that can be moved to shelter in cool weather. The dramatic flower heads are used as cut flowers, and their nectar attracts birds and butterflies. The young inflorescences are also used as food in parts of Southeast Asia; use only correctly identified plants and locally appropriate food guidance. ## Site and Water Plant in fertile, organic-rich soil that drains freely but stays consistently moist. Torch ginger grows in full sun or partial shade, and a protected site helps its tall pseudostems remain attractive. Rhizomes spread over time to form broad colonies. ## Maintenance Maintain steady moisture during active growth and allow room for the clump to expand. Divide rhizomes when a plant needs renewal or propagation, and remove damaged leaves and spent flower stalks as needed.
