About Hardy Rubber Tree

Eucommia ulmoides, the hardy rubber tree, is a slow-growing deciduous shade tree native to China. Its dense, rounded crown becomes more pyramidal when young, and female trees may produce winged fruits in summer and fall. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/eucommia-ulmoides/common-name/hardy-rubber-tree/) describes its mature size, soil tolerance, and USDA hardiness information. ## Placement and growing conditions Choose a site in full sun with room for a large tree: NC State reports 40–60 feet tall and 25–50 feet wide at maturity. It grows in well-drained, moist soils across clay, loam, or sandy textures, and can tolerate occasional dryness after establishment. The tree is useful where a broad shade canopy is wanted in a yard, street, or park setting. ## Seasonal interest and use Glossy green leaves form a dense canopy during the growing season and fall in autumn. Flowers are inconspicuous; female trees can develop winged samaras later in the year. The species is dioecious, so a single tree may not produce fruit. ## Maintenance Allow adequate space for the eventual crown and water deeply while the tree establishes. Once established, it tolerates periods of dry weather. Routine pruning should be limited to structural training and removal of damaged branches.
