About Velvet Blazer® Burning Bush

Velvet Blazer® is the ‘Veblzam’ selection of winged euonymus, with an upright, rounded outline and a finer texture than typical burning bush because its stems lack corky wings. Green summer foliage turns color earlier in autumn than comparable winged euonymus selections and remains on the plant later. ## Size and season [Lake County Nursery’s cultivar sheet](https://www.lakecountynursery.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Euonymus-alata-%E2%80%98Veblzam%E2%80%99-Velvet-Blazer-%C2%AE-.pdf) lists an 8–10 foot height, 6–8 foot spread, and zone 3 hardiness. It describes inconspicuous flowers, orange-red fruit, an upright rounded shape, and foliage that colors about two weeks earlier and drops later than other E. alatus selections. The broader species has showy red autumn foliage and is deciduous, as summarized by the [University of Connecticut Plant Database](https://plantdatabase.uconn.edu/detail.php?pid=167). ## Siting Use it where a taller deciduous screen, hedge, or shrub border can accommodate its spread. Full sun to partial shade is suitable for winged euonymus; sun encourages a stronger autumn display. Check local guidance because the species can naturalize in some regions. ## Maintenance Allow room for the mature outline and prune selectively if it exceeds the site. The cultivar’s upright form and wingless stems provide winter structure even after the leaves fall.
