About Emerald & Gold Wintercreeper Euonymus

Emerald & Gold wintercreeper is a spreading evergreen shrub with bright green leaves edged in broad yellow. The foliage may blush pink in cold weather, giving this compact selection color through winter. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/119849/euonymus-fortunei-emerald-n-gold/details) describes its foliage and mature dimensions. ## Placement Use it as a low groundcover, border shrub, or informal hedge where creeping stems have room to spread. Full sun brings out the strongest gold; the plant also grows in partial or full shade. Allow about 1.6–3.3 feet of height and 3.3–4.9 feet of spread at maturity, based on the [RHS size range](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/119849/euonymus-fortunei-emerald-n-gold/details). ## Soil and watering It grows in chalk, clay, loam, or sandy soil when drainage is good. Keep new plants evenly moist while they establish, then water during extended dry spells. Avoid waterlogged ground; [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/wintercreeper/) notes that wintercreeper tolerates most soils except extremely wet sites. ## Maintenance Trim long shoots in early spring to keep the planting within its allotted space. Check the bed edge because stems can root where they touch soil. Remove damaged or out-of-place growth before it climbs nearby structures or woody plants. Wintercreeper can spread beyond gardens, so keep runners contained as advised in the [University of Maryland Extension guide](https://www.extension.umd.edu/resource/winter-creeper).
