About Boxleaf Euonymus

Boxleaf Euonymus is a small-leaved, dense evergreen shrub with an upright, formal outline. Its compact foliage makes it useful as a low hedge, edging, or a clipped accent where a boxwood-like shape is wanted. ## Form and Siting Oregon State University describes Euonymus japonicus ‘Microphyllus’ as roughly 1–3 feet tall, with dark green leaves and upright branches. It grows in sun and needs little or no routine pruning once established. Allow for the selection's mature spread and avoid placing it where its roots will remain in waterlogged soil. ## Seasonal Interest The small evergreen leaves provide structure through the year; flowers are not the main reason to grow this selection. It can be shaped for a neat outline or left to keep its naturally dense form. ## Maintenance Prune lightly to maintain the desired profile, and remove damaged or uneven growth. The [Oregon State University Landscape Plants reference](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/euonymus-japonicus-small-leafed-selections) lists the selection as hardy to USDA Zone 6 (with 7 also noted) and describes its size, foliage, and sun exposure.
