About Manhattan Euonymus

Manhattan euonymus is a dense, upright evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub used for screening, informal hedges, and mass plantings. Its glossy foliage gives structure through much of the year, while small summer flowers and pink fall capsules add seasonal detail. ([Oregon State University Landscape Plants](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/euonymus-kiautschovicus-manhattan); [University of Missouri Extension](https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g6820)) ## Form and seasonal interest Oregon State describes plants about 4–6 feet tall, sometimes taller, and around 5 feet wide, with opposite, leathery, dark green leaves. Loose clusters of small greenish-white flowers appear in midsummer; pink capsules develop in fall. In colder locations the foliage can thin or discolor over winter, so the plant may behave as semi-evergreen rather than holding a uniform evergreen screen. ## Siting Grow in sun or light shade. The cultivar is useful as an informal hedge, screen, or mass planting where its upright branching can fill space without frequent shaping. Missouri Extension notes that winter shade helps spreading euonymus retain greener leaves. ## Maintenance ## Maintenance Water during establishment and in extended dry weather. Check periodically for euonymus scale, which can affect this group, and prune selectively if a screen needs to be kept within its allotted space.
