About Gateway Joe Pye Weed

Gateway Joe Pye Weed is a compact, sturdy selection of a tall eastern North American perennial, with wine-red stems and broad crowns of dusky pink flowers. Its late-summer display rises above whorled green foliage and is followed by seed heads that can remain through winter. ## Form and flowering Plants are typically 4–5 feet tall and 18–24 inches wide in the North Carolina Extension profile; its narrative describes plants up to 6 feet. The clusters flower in midsummer and attract bees and butterflies. The upright habit suits the back of a border, a rain garden, or a moist naturalized planting. ## Growing conditions Give it full sun or partial shade and fertile soil that stays consistently moist. It tolerates wet ground but does not handle drought or hot, dry sites well. The rhizomatous roots can form small colonies, so allow room for gradual spread. ## Maintenance Leave seed heads for winter interest, then cut stems to the ground in late winter or early spring. Divide in spring or fall if a colony needs to be moved or reduced. [North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/eutrochium-maculatum-gateway/) describes the cultivar’s size, flowering, moisture needs, wildlife value, and care.
