Chocolate Joe Pye Weed, also called Chocolate Snakeroot, is an herbaceous perennial grown for its dark foliage and airy white flower clusters. Its purple stems carry chocolate-brown leaves that provide contrast from spring into summer, with flowers appearing in summer and early autumn.
## Foliage and flowers
The cultivar forms an upright clump, with white flowers held in rounded clusters above the darker leaves. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a mature height and spread of 0.5–1 metre; other regional references describe smaller plants, so allow for variation with conditions. The flowers extend the display into autumn and can be used in informal borders or wildlife plantings.
## Siting
Partial shade helps retain the rich foliage color. It grows in clay, loam, or chalk and prefers moisture-retentive soil that drains reasonably well, though it can tolerate poorly drained ground. Keep it watered during dry spells, especially in sunny exposures.
## Maintenance
Cut faded flower stems back to the base and divide in spring if needed. Handle the plant carefully and do not consume it: white snakeroot is associated with livestock poisoning.
