About Wood Spurge

Wood spurge is an evergreen, rhizomatous perennial that forms spreading colonies of glossy, dark green rosettes. In spring, upright stems carry showy yellow-green bracts that brighten shaded borders and woodland edges. ## Form and flowering The plant usually grows 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. Underground runners make it useful as ground cover, though colonies can spread beyond their allotted space. The green-yellow bracts appear in spring above leathery foliage that can develop purple tones in cooler weather. ## Growing conditions Grow it in full sun to partial shade, including dappled shade, in loose, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry conditions after establishment, but poorly drained winter soil can cause root problems. Afternoon shade is helpful in hot climates. ## Maintenance Allow room for the rhizomes or edge the planting to contain it. Remove faded stems after flowering while protecting the new growth, and use gloves and eye protection when handling the irritating milky sap.
