About Candelabra euphorbia

Euphorbia enopla, often called candelabra or pincushion euphorbia, is a South African succulent shrub that branches from the base. Its ribbed green, gray-green, or bluish-green stems carry conspicuous red spines, creating a strongly architectural form. ## Form and Siting The branching stems can develop a candelabra-like outline, while short-lived leaves leave the ribbed stems and spines as the main year-round feature. Kumbula Indigenous Nursery describes plants about 60 cm to 1 m tall and places the species in the Eastern Cape’s arid to semi-arid Karoo, including sandy and stony sites. Its narrow spiny structure suits a rock garden or a container where it can be viewed without crowding paths. ## Growing Conditions Give it bright light and a sharply draining mineral mix; avoid prolonged wet soil. The nursery records USDA Zones 9–11 and flowering sometime between winter and summer, with flowers varying between male and female plants. It also cautions that damaged stems release poisonous milky sap that can irritate skin and injure eyes or mouth. ## Maintenance Water sparingly while the mix dries between waterings and protect the plant from repeated hard frost. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or pruning, and keep cut stems and sap away from children and pets. Use a stable pot and place the sharp spines away from walkways.
