Euphorbia horrida, the African milk barrel, is a clump-forming succulent with upright blue-green stems divided into wavy ribs. The ridges carry stiff, spine-like flower stalks, giving the plant a strongly sculptural outline for a sunny container or dry garden. ## Growth and siting
Plants may reach about 1–1.5 m tall and 0.1–0.5 m wide over many years. Grow it in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position with a sharply drained, sandy or loamy mix. The green and yellow cyathia are small and may appear singly along the ribs; the persistent stems provide the main display.
## Landscape use
Use this slow-developing succulent as a specimen in a rock garden or in a container that drains freely. Its narrow spread suits a collection of architectural plants, while the spines call for generous clearance from walkways and regular handling areas.
## Maintenance
Water sparingly during active growth and keep the mix drier in winter. No routine pruning is needed. The sap can irritate skin and eyes and the plant is harmful if eaten, so place it away from children and pets and wear gloves when repotting.
