About Five-angled spurge

Five-angled spurge is a branching, cactus-like succulent with slender green stems marked by five or six ribs and small purple flower structures at the tips. It comes from South Africa’s Eastern Cape and develops into a tall, many-stemmed specimen as it matures. ## Growing Conditions Use a very free-draining mineral potting mix and give the plant bright light so its stems keep a compact shape. Light shade can help protect it from bleaching in intense sun, and sun tolerance varies among plants. It can be grown in a container or outside where frost is not severe; an unsupported plant in lower light may become untidy as it grows. ## Seasonal Interest The small, purple cyathia sit at the branch tips, while the ribbed stems provide the main architectural feature. Mature plants may reach about 2.5–3 m tall, so allow room for the upright branches and provide support if they begin to lean. ## Maintenance Water moderately during active growth in well-drained soil, then keep the plant dry in the coldest part of winter. Damaged stems release milky latex that can irritate skin and eyes, so use gloves and eye protection when pruning or taking cuttings.
