Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum), also called prairie gentian or Texas bluebell, is an upright short-lived flowering plant native to the central United States. It is usually grown as an annual and valued for bell-shaped summer flowers and long, straight stems for cutting. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/eustoma-grandiflorum/common-name/texas-bluebell/) describes pink, white, and lavender blooms from summer to frost.
## Flowers and use
The species bears flowers singly or in clusters near the tops of its stems; cultivated forms broaden the color range and may have single or double blooms. Its vertical shape suits a cutting bed, border, or container, where the flowers can be harvested without removing the plant's entire display. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/57097/eustoma-grandiflorum/details) records the species as an excellent cut flower.
## Growing conditions
Plant in a bright site and maintain evenly moist, well-drained soil. NC State recommends full morning sun with afternoon shade in warmer gardens, while RHS lists full sun and loam. Seedlings develop slowly, so established transplants are often the simpler choice; tall flowering stems may need support.
## Maintenance
Water consistently during active growth and avoid waterlogged soil. Remove spent stems as flowers finish, and stake tall plants before stems lean. Lisianthus can overwinter outdoors only in mild climates; it is commonly treated as an annual elsewhere.
