About Euterpe edulis

Euterpe edulis, often called jussara or assai palm, is a slender South American palm with arching, feather-shaped fronds and an orange-bronze crownshaft. It can reach about 9 m (30 ft) and makes a tropical accent where winter temperatures stay mild. [NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/6/2627) describes its form and cultivation; [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:666911-1) records its native range from Brazil to Argentina. ## Placement Give young palms partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. As it matures, it can take full sun. This species favors regular moisture; established plants can tolerate waterlogged ground, though consistently moist soil with drainage is a practical garden setting. ## Flowers and Fruit Cream-colored flower clusters arise among the fronds, followed by drooping clusters of small brown to black fruits. The fruit pulp is used for a popular Brazilian drink, and the palm heart is also eaten in its native range. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment, and protect the growing point from cold. Its eventual height and long, arching fronds need room overhead and around the crown.
