About American Beech

The American beech is a stately deciduous tree reaching 50 to 80 feet with a dense, rounded crown. It is famous for its smooth, silver-gray bark and long, cigar-shaped winter buds. The dark green, serrated leaves feature prominent parallel veins and turn a striking golden-bronze in autumn. Thriving in deep, moist, well-drained acidic soils, it is highly shade-tolerant but sensitive to soil compaction. It serves as a magnificent shade tree for large parks, providing edible nuts for wildlife and humans alike.
