Fernleaf Beech

Fagus sylvatica 'Asplenifolia' is a large deciduous beech whose narrow, deeply cut leaves give the canopy a fernlike texture. Its size and dense shade suit a spacious lawn, park, or other setting where the sculptural foliage can be seen clearly. ## Form and Seasonal Interest Allow for substantial mature growth: published exact-selection estimates range from about 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide after 30 years to 50–60 feet tall, with some broader horticultural ranges. Bright green leaves turn golden bronze in autumn, and the smooth gray bark remains distinctive in winter. Full sun is listed for the selection, while young European beech plants can be sensitive to harsh exposure; protect establishment with suitable moisture and avoid hot, dry sites. ## Maintenance Water young trees during dry periods until established. Once the tree has a sound structure, limit pruning to damaged or crossing branches and preserve the natural rounded canopy.
