About Cock's Comb Beech

Fagus sylvatica 'Cristata', commonly called cock's comb or crested beech, is recognized by its unusual foliage. Short-stalked leaves are crumpled, toothed, and clustered in tufts near the ends of branches, giving the tree a distinctive, irregular texture. ## Foliage and form Young trees can have a compact, upright shape, but mature size varies and old examples can become large trees. The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/97842/fagus-sylvatica-cristata/details) lists both cock's comb and crested beech as common names. [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/fagus/fagus-sylvatica/) describes the clustered, curled leaves and records specimens approaching 30 m, so leave generous room when planting. ## Growing conditions The [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/fagus-sylvatica-cristata-cockscomb-european-beech) lists this selection for zones 4–7 and full sun, and notes that beech trees prefer consistent, moderate moisture. Its plant finder also identifies shade tree and specimen uses. ## Maintenance Choose a permanent site with space for the mature crown. Water during establishment and during prolonged dry periods, and retain the tree's natural branching pattern.
