Create design onlineAbout Columnar Green Beech
Dawyck beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck') is a tall, narrow columnar tree with glossy green leaves that turn golden-brown in autumn. The RHS accepts this selection and identifies the older “Fastigiata” name as misapplied for it, listing a mature height of 20–30 metres and spread of 4–8 metres ([RHS Dawyck profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/95987/fagus-sylvatica-dawyck/details); [RHS synonym entry](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/93753/fagus-sylvatica-fastigiate-misapplied-1/details)).
## Form and Site
The upright crown provides a vertical accent while using less ground width than a broad-canopied beech. Allow for the substantial mature height and a wider crown as the tree ages. It grows in full sun or partial shade and tolerates chalk, clay, loam, and sand.
## Growing Conditions
Choose well-drained soil that retains some moisture. The RHS reports a long time to maturity and a columnar upright habit; the mature size range is useful for planning spacing around buildings, paths, and neighboring trees.
## Maintenance
Keep the crown’s natural upright shape and remove damaged branches when needed. Avoid pruning that would compromise the single columnar framework; use the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/95987/fagus-sylvatica-dawyck/details) for the cultivar’s growing conditions.
