About Miniature Columnar Beech

Fagus sylvatica 'Felderbach' is a very slow-growing beech with unusually small, dark green leaves and a densely branched, narrow shrub-like outline. The leaves turn bronze and brown before they fall, extending its seasonal interest beyond summer. ## Garden Use Its compact growth suits a small garden or a large container where the fine foliage and architectural outline can be appreciated at close range. Bluebell Nursery lists a mature height of 2.5 to 3 metres and a spread near 2 metres; Trees and Shrubs Online describes the cultivar as a distinct, compact selection with leaves much smaller than the species. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone evenly watered while the plant establishes, and allow room for the shrub to broaden gradually. The named selection is not a fast filler, so place it where a measured, slow-growing form is useful. ## Maintenance Little regular pruning is needed; remove damaged branches or trim only when clearance requires it. Old leaves fall in autumn, so a light cleanup may be useful near paving or containers.
