About Weeping Green Beech

Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula' forms a broad, irregular canopy of green foliage on branches that arch and trail toward the ground. Plant it as a long-lived specimen where its mature spread and sculptural outline have room to develop. ## Form and Seasonal Interest The crown may become wider than tall, or more upright with steeply drooping branches; the cultivar usually reaches about 30–50 feet tall and spreads 30–60 feet. Its leaves turn copper or golden brown in autumn, and the bare winter branches keep the weeping form visible. Small spring flowers are inconspicuous. See the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/91418/fagus-sylvatica-pendula/details) and [University of Florida IFAS fact sheet](https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/database/documents/pdf/tree_fact_sheets/fagsyld.pdf). ## Siting and Soil Give this large tree full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Allow generous clearance for its low, sweeping branches and surface roots; a broad lawn or park setting suits it better than a small yard. It tolerates several soil textures when drainage is good. ## Maintenance Train a young tree to a strong central leader, then remove only branches that obstruct a path or need clearance. Prune for structure while the tree is young and avoid excess soil moisture around the roots.
