About Purple Weeping Beech

Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea Pendula’ is a deciduous ornamental beech with a mushroom-shaped crown and branches that curve downward. Its dark purple leaves emerge with reddish tones, turn coppery in autumn, and frame the smooth gray bark as the tree matures. ## Form and placement Allow room for a small specimen tree: the [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/95176/fagus-sylvatica-atropurpurea-group-purpurea-pendula/details) gives a mature height and spread of 2.5–4 metres, or roughly 8–13 feet. It grows in full sun or partial shade; the purple foliage is strongest in a sunny position. The RHS also notes spring flowers and autumn fruits. A [University of Florida IFAS profile](https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/trees/FAGSYLE.pdf) describes moderate drought tolerance, low aerosol-salt tolerance, and the need to prune lower branches where pedestrian or vehicle clearance is required. ## Soil and watering Plant in moist but well-drained soil. Water during establishment and extended dry periods, and leave space for the pendulous crown rather than trying to train it into a narrow upright form. ## Maintenance Remove only branches that interfere with clearance or spoil the desired outline. Avoid heavy pruning, which can disrupt the weeping form, and protect the tree from salty coastal spray.
