About Apache Plume

Apache plume is a native southwestern shrub valued for white spring and summer flowers and feathery seed plumes. Its size varies by site and seed source: the U.S. Forest Service reports a broad 2–8 foot height range, while North Carolina Extension describes a typical plant near 6 feet tall and wide ([USDA Forest Service](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/falpar), [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/fallugia-paradoxa/)). The fine foliage may be deciduous or persist in mild conditions. ## Flowers and Use White, saucer-shaped flowers appear from spring into summer, followed by airy plumed fruits that remain decorative as they mature. Use the shrub on sunny slopes, in dry informal plantings, or where its spreading roots can help stabilize soil. It is native to dry, rocky and gravelly habitats across the Southwest. ## Growing Apache plume tolerates sandy, rocky, loamy, and clay soils, but needs good drainage, especially in wet-winter climates. Full sun encourages flowering; light shade is tolerated. Once established it is drought tolerant, though flowering and seed production can decrease during prolonged stress. ## Maintenance Prune selectively after flowering or when older stems become congested. It can spread by seed and root suckers, so remove unwanted growth while young. Avoid shearing the whole shrub into a formal shape; selective thinning preserves its natural branching and plumed fruit.
