About Leopard Plant

Leopard plant is a clumping, shade-loving perennial grown for large glossy leaves that may be spotted with gold and for yellow daisy-like flowers. It suits moist woodland edges and sheltered waterside beds, where its bold leaves add texture from spring through the growing season ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/farfugium-japonicum/common-name/leopard-plant/)). ## Placement Plant it in partial to deep shade, especially where midday sun would scorch the leaves. A rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage supports steady growth. Use it in small groups along a shaded border or near a pond, stream edge, or bog garden. The species generally reaches 1–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, so leave space for the clump to broaden. ## Flowers and foliage Yellow flower heads rise above the foliage in summer and can continue into fall. The broad leaves are typically green, often with gold spotting; some gardeners remove the flower stems when they prefer the foliage to remain the focus. ## Maintenance Water deeply during dry summer periods and remove damaged leaves as needed. Watch for slugs and snails, which can chew the leaves. In cold weather the foliage may die back, with fresh growth returning when conditions warm.
