About Umbrella Bamboo

Umbrella bamboo is an evergreen, clump-forming bamboo with slender green canes that arch outward into a soft, fountain-like shape. The RHS profile gives a mature range of about 8–13 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, with greater height possible in favorable conditions ([RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/48657/sinarundinaria-murielae/details)). ## Placement Give the clump room to develop and use it as a sheltered screen, backdrop, or specimen near a patio. It grows in full sun or partial shade, but the RHS recommends sheltered exposure and notes that partial shade suits cultivation. Its clumping growth makes a denser, contained planting than running bamboo. ## Soil and water Plant in clay or loam that stays moist while draining freely. Avoid a waterlogged site. Keep the root area evenly moist during establishment and dry spells, and mulch to limit rapid moisture swings. It can also be grown in a container if the pot is large and drainage is good. ## Maintenance Remove damaged or dead canes at ground level to keep the clump open and tidy. The plant is evergreen, so it can provide year-round foliage where winter conditions allow; the RHS hardiness information is stated in its own H-scale and is not a USDA-zone rating.
