Create design onlineAbout Camouflage Variegated Japanese Aralia
Camouflage® variegated Japanese aralia is a mounding evergreen shrub with large leaves marbled in yellow, green, and cream. It is listed botanically as Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ and adds year-round foliage color to shaded gardens and containers.
## Landscape Use
Place this cultivar as a broad foliage accent in a shade border, sheltered courtyard, or large container. The [ThinkShrubs catalog](https://online.flippingbook.com/view/308986587/34/) lists mature dimensions of 5–8 feet tall and wide, a mounding habit, and hardiness in zones 7–10.
## Growing Conditions
Shade is appropriate, with enough ambient light to keep the variegation visible. The [RHS Fatsia guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/fatsia) says fatsias grow in a wide range of soils except very wet or dry conditions and recommends shelter from severe winter cold. Keep the root zone evenly moist during establishment and use a well-drained, humus-rich soil.
## Maintenance
Water during prolonged dry weather, especially in containers. Remove damaged foliage and prune lightly in spring if the shrub outgrows its space. Leave enough room for the mounded spread so its patterned leaves are not crowded against paths or neighboring plants.
