About Cliff Fendlerbush

Fendlera rupicola, or cliff fendlerbush, is a deciduous, widely branched shrub native to rocky parts of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Its loose outline and spring flowers suit dry, naturalistic plantings where a tough shrub can grow without rich soil. ## Flowers and Landscape Use Plants grow about 3–9 feet tall and bloom from March through June, with flowering sometimes continuing into August in parts of Texas. Small leaves and shreddy bark add texture, and four-celled capsules can remain on the shrub through winter. The [USDA Forest Service species review](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/fenrup) documents its range, form, size, and seasonal development. ## Siting and Soil Use it on a sunny, rocky slope or in a dry garden with very well-drained soil. It naturally occurs on ledges and canyon slopes, including poor or alkaline soils, and tolerates intense heat and considerable drought. Avoid sites that remain wet. ## Maintenance Once established, this shrub needs little intervention. Remove only damaged or crossing branches when necessary, and preserve the naturally broad, irregular form.
