Fishhook barrel cactus

Fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) is a long-lived desert succulent with a ribbed, barrel-shaped stem and prominent hooked central spines. Most plants flower in orange shades, with yellow or red flowers also occurring; the [Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum](https://digitallibrary.desertmuseum.org/books/nhsd_cactus_.php) describes usual heights of 2–4 feet and occasional plants above 10 feet. ## Landscape Use Use it as a focal plant in a gravel garden or dry desert planting, with generous clearance from paths. Its spines are strongly hooked, and mature plants can lean toward the southwest, so choose a stable site with room around the crown. ## Growing Conditions The University of Arizona Campus Arboretum recommends full sun and well-drained sandy or gravelly soil. It needs little water and is suited to a sharply drained rock garden; standing water around the roots can cause rot. The species is native to the Sonoran Desert and adjacent regions of the Southwest. ## Seasonal Interest Flowers open at the crown in summer, followed by yellow fruit. The Desert Museum reports a typical lifespan of 50–100 years. ## Maintenance Water sparingly after establishment and keep the base free of persistent moisture. Avoid handling the spines directly.
