About Boulder Blue Blue Fescue

Boulder Blue blue fescue (Festuca glauca ‘Boulder Blue’) makes a tight, rounded mound of metallic blue foliage that holds its color through the year. Its compact size suits edging, repeated drifts, and the front of a sunny border. ## Size and Placement Allow about 15 inches of height and 12 inches of width. The fine leaves form a clump rather than a spreading carpet, so use several plants for a continuous edge or massed ground-level accent. ## Light and Water Plant in full sun for the strongest blue color; it also tolerates part shade. The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District lists low irrigation and some drought tolerance, making this a useful choice for a water-conscious planting after establishment. Provide drainage and avoid persistently wet soil. ## Seasonal Interest Blue-gray evergreen foliage supplies structure in winter. In late spring and early summer, slender seedheads rise above the mound; the local plant record lists a June–July bloom period. Remove only damaged or unusually long leaves; cutting the whole clump hard is unnecessary.
