Create design onlineAbout Idaho Fescue Grass
Festuca idahoensis forms dense, fine-textured clumps of blue-green leaves and sends up pale flowering stems in late spring or early summer. This western North American bunchgrass suits meadow, prairie, rock-garden, and restoration plantings where its persistent roots help hold soil.
## Size and Siting
The foliage commonly forms a tuft around 8–12 inches tall, with flowering stems rising higher; garden references report clumps roughly 12–24 inches wide. Plant in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. It is adapted to dry and moist upland settings, but avoid prolonged saturation. The University of Idaho Extension lists USDA zones 3–6 for the species.
## Garden Use
Use it in a naturalistic border, meadow, or grouped planting for fine texture and blue-green color. Its seeds and foliage support wildlife, and Marion Soil and Water Conservation District lists it for erosion control and notes its value for birds and pollinators.
## Maintenance
After seeds have dropped in late summer, lightly clip spent flowering stalks to reduce thatch while leaving healthy basal foliage in place.
