About Native Roots Idaho Fescue

Native Roots Idaho Fescue is a compact, cool-season bunchgrass that forms a dense clump of fine blue-green leaves. The nursery lists it at 10–14 inches tall and 12–16 inches wide, with spring bloom, for this named offering. ## Form and seasonal interest The low mound provides a fine-textured contrast in a grass planting, rock garden, or small-scale meadow. Idaho fescue is a long-lived perennial bunchgrass with densely tufted leaves and upright flowering stems; wild populations vary in height, so the compact measurements here follow the Native Roots listing for its own product. ## Siting Plant in full sun to part shade. Native Roots recommends deep soil but notes that the grass can grow in thin, rocky ground; drainage is essential because it does not tolerate saturated soil. Once established, Idaho fescue can persist on well-drained, coarse sites, and its dense root system helps hold soil. ## Maintenance Water new plants while roots establish, then let the soil drain between watering. Leave the foliage in place through the season for texture, and remove old or damaged leaves when fresh growth resumes. See the [Native Roots Idaho Fescue listing](https://native-roots.net/idaho-fescue/) for this selection’s size and care notes and the [US Forest Service species review](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/fesida) for the species’ bunchgrass form and habitat variation.
