Blauglut is a named blue fescue cultivar with compact, silver-blue to blue-green foliage. The Royal Horticultural Society lists the cultivar as Festuca glauca ‘Blauglut’ and records ‘Blue Glow’ as a synonym; Morton Arboretum also describes this cultivar’s silver-blue foliage ([RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/114506/festuca-glauca-blauglut/details), [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/blue-fescue/)). Wisconsin Extension includes Blauglut among blue fescue cultivars and notes that its foliage is especially compact and blue-green in summer ([University of Wisconsin Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/blue-fescue-festuca-ovina-glauca/)).
## Form and Placement
Use it in a sunny border, rock garden, or container where the fine blue foliage can contrast with broader leaves and flowers. Blue fescue forms a low clump; flowering stems rise above the foliage in late spring or early summer. Good drainage helps it persist, while heat and humid conditions can shorten its life.
## Growing
Plant in full sun for the strongest blue color and in soil that drains freely. The cool-season foliage is most active in spring and fall. In hot climates, a little afternoon shade can reduce stress.
## Maintenance
In early spring, comb out dead leaves or trim the clump before new growth begins. Divide crowded clumps every few years and discard declining centers. Cut back flower stalks if you prefer a neater mound or want to limit self-seeding.
