About Red Fescue

Festuca rubra 'Molate' is a spreading, cool-season grass selected near Point Molate in California. Its fine gray-green foliage forms soft, low drifts that work as a meadow groundcover or a lower-water lawn alternative in a suitable climate. ## Growth and Seasonal Color Foliage is commonly 12–18 inches tall, while open flower stems can rise to about 3 feet; plants spread roughly 2–3 feet. Spring and summer flowers begin purplish and age toward tan. The [California Flora Nursery profile](https://www.calfloranursery.com/plants/festuca-rubra-molate-strain/) and [Boething Treeland Farms](https://www.boethingtreeland.com/plants/festuca-rubra-molate/) describe its spreading habit and seasonal range. ## Siting and Water Plant in full sun near the coast or give afternoon shade in hotter inland sites. Use well-drained soil; it tolerates clay and sand but should not stay wet during summer dormancy. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce irrigation once rooted, adding occasional summer water if inland heat keeps it active. ## Maintenance Leave it unmown for a natural meadow effect, or mow after seed heads mature if a shorter, tidier groundcover is wanted. Divide or thin only if the planting becomes too dense for its space.
