Ficus carica ‘Chicago Hardy’ is a cold-tolerant, deciduous fig grown for edible fruit and its bold, lobed foliage. It can die back in severe winters and regrow from the roots, with fruit developing on new growth.
## Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun to light shade in a well-drained, sheltered location. A large container can be moved to a cool indoor space for winter; in-ground plants in cold climates benefit from deep root mulch. Sources place this cultivar in zones 6–10, with zone 5 possible in a warm microclimate with protection. ## Fruit and Placement
A protected mature plant typically reaches about 10–15 feet tall and 9–12 feet wide. The medium figs have purple to bronze skin and pink flesh, ripening in late summer or early fall. The fruit can be eaten fresh or preserved, and the plant also works as an ornamental specimen where its mature spread fits. ## Maintenance
Water regularly while the plant establishes, then adjust to soil and weather so roots do not remain waterlogged. Mulch in-ground roots before winter; container plants can be overwintered dormant in a cool garage or similar space. Prune to control size and remove dead wood after winter. Harvest figs only when fully ripe, since they do not ripen after picking. [Illinois Extension](https://extension.illinois.edu/news-releases/go-figure-figs-are-great-addition-home-gardens)
