Burgundy Rubber Plant is the dark-leaved cultivar of Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’. New leaves emerge burgundy-red and mature to deep, dark green, giving this evergreen a strong foliage presence indoors. It works as a floor-level container specimen, and pruning can keep its upright growth within the available room.
## Light and Placement
Place it in bright filtered or indirect light, or partial shade, and keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. In temperate climates it is best grown as a houseplant; Monrovia lists outdoor USDA hardiness zones 10–11. The same source describes a mature plant about 6 ft tall or taller and 2 ft wide, though indoor size depends on light, container, and pruning. ## Water and Soil
Use a well-drained potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Water thoroughly, then let the upper soil dry slightly before watering again; persistently wet mix can cause root problems and leaf loss. Wipe dust from the large, glossy leaves so they remain clean and visible. [Clemson Extension](https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/rubber-plant/)
## Maintenance
Prune in spring to control height or encourage branching, and repot when the roots have filled the container. The milky sap can irritate skin, so wash it off promptly after pruning.
