Create design onlineAbout Ficus Ruby (Variegated Rubber Plant)
Ficus ‘Ruby’ is a tropical rubber plant grown indoors for thick, glossy leaves patterned in green, cream, pink, and red. Bright, filtered light helps the variegation stay vivid, while a pot with drainage makes it easier to avoid waterlogged roots. [Wasson Nursery](https://shop.wassonnursery.com/products/8-ficus-ruby-clesen) identifies the plant as Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’ and describes its tricolor foliage; [Reems Creek Nursery's care guide](https://reemscreek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Garden-Guide-Ficus-elastica-Ruby.pdf) gives cultivar-specific advice on light and watering.
## Light and placement
Place Ruby near a bright window where it receives strong indirect light. Gentle morning sun may be suitable, but harsh afternoon rays can scorch leaves. Turn the pot occasionally for balanced growth, and keep it in a stable spot because a sudden move may prompt leaf drop. New leaves often show the strongest red tones before maturing to lighter colors.
## Water and growth
Allow the upper 2 to 3 inches of potting mix to dry before watering, then let excess water drain away. Check more often during active growth and reduce watering in winter. A nursery guide reports that Ruby can reach about 8 to 10 feet as a houseplant in its region, while [Arbor Day Foundation's retail profile](https://shop.arborday.org/nursery/ruby-variegated-rubber-tree) lists a smaller 3 to 6 foot mature height; indoor size therefore depends on the plant, container, light, and pruning.
## Maintenance
Wipe dust from the broad leaves with a damp soft cloth. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during active growth, following the product label, and avoid leaving the pot standing in water.
