Create design onlineAbout Fire Light® Panicle Hydrangea Tree Form
Fire Light® (‘SMHPFL’) is presented in tree form, retaining the selection’s large panicles that open creamy white and mature to vivid red on sturdy stems in early summer. Proven Winners describes panicle hydrangea trees as nursery-trained forms with a raised canopy rather than grafted plants; training changes the growth form while retaining the cultivar’s flowering characteristics. Fire Light is featured in the breeder’s hydrangea-tree guidance alongside its shrub-form information. ## Site
Panicle hydrangeas are deciduous, tolerate more sun than many other hydrangeas, and flower on new wood. Choose full sun to part shade and a well-drained location; mulch helps protect the shallow roots. The raised canopy makes this a useful focal point where a multi-stem shrub form would not fit the desired garden profile. ## Maintenance
Check any support after planting and keep ties from cutting into the trunk; Proven Winners recommends reassessing a nursery stake as the tree establishes. Prune selectively in late winter or early spring, preserving the intended trunk and canopy while removing lower growth as needed. Keep the root zone mulched and avoid poorly drained soil.
