Weekend forsythia is a deciduous shrub with slender, upright branches and abundant golden-yellow flowers before the leaves appear in spring. The cultivar is also listed as ‘Week-End’ and ‘Courtalyn’, so those names can help when comparing nursery labels. [The Royal Horticultural Society's plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/223464/forsythia-%C3%97-intermedia-week-end/details) confirms these synonyms and describes the plant's flowers, size, and growing conditions.
## Size and placement
Allow for a mature height and spread of about 5 to 8 feet in a typical garden, with the exact size depending on pruning and growing conditions. The RHS gives a range of 1.5 to 2.5 metres for both dimensions. Full sun or partial shade is suitable; moist but well-drained soil supports steady growth. Forsythia can be used in a flower border, as an informal hedge, or for cut branches.
## Seasonal interest
The main display is the bright spring flowering on bare stems. Its green foliage fills out after flowering and drops in autumn, leaving an open branching outline through winter. The RHS classifies the plant as deciduous and lists yellow flowers borne before the leaves.
## Maintenance
Prune after flowering to shape the shrub or remove older stems, preserving the shoots that will carry next spring's blooms. Water during establishment and check soil moisture during prolonged dry spells.
