Fragaria × ananassa ‘Allstar’ is a June-bearing strawberry selected for large, firm, flavorful berries and a productive midseason harvest. White flowers appear in early spring, followed by a concentrated picking period that usually lasts two to three weeks around June.
## Site and harvest
Choose a sunny spot with fertile, moist, well-drained soil; loam suits this cultivar. The [Allstar profile](https://www.gardenia.net/plant/fragaria-ananassa-allstar/1000) describes a compact plant about 6 to 9 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide and lists USDA Zones 4 to 8. Harvest fully red berries promptly and use them fresh, in baking, or for preserves.
## Establishing a bed
Plant in spring and keep the shallow-rooted bed evenly watered without leaving it waterlogged. For June-bearing plants, removing flowers during the first growing season helps direct growth toward roots and crowns. Mulch helps keep fruit clean and suppress weeds; leave enough space for airflow and access during picking.
## Maintenance
Weed regularly and check leaves and fruit for disease or insect damage. Renovate or replace older beds as productivity declines, often after several years. See [University of Maryland Extension’s strawberry guide](https://www.extension.umd.edu/resource/growing-strawberries-home-garden) for planting, runner, and harvest guidance.
