About California Coffeeberry

California coffeeberry is an evergreen shrub native to the western coast, grown for dense foliage, adaptable form, and berries that ripen through several colors. Species plants can range from low and spreading to upright and tree-like, so leave room for the form expected at the planting site. ## Landscape Use Use coffeeberry as a screen, broad hedge, habitat shrub, or specimen where its natural outline can develop. The [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/frangula-californica) describes shrubs commonly 4–8 feet tall, with larger forms; the [UC Master Gardener profile](https://ucanr.edu/site/uc-master-gardener-program-sonoma-county/rhamnus-buckthorn-coffeeberry) reports that wild plants may exceed 12 feet. ## Foliage and Fruit Leaves remain through the year in mild conditions. Small flowers are followed by berries that change from green to red and then purple-black. Birds and small animals eat ripe fruit, while flowers provide a resource for pollinators. ## Growing Conditions Coffeeberry grows in sun or partial shade and is not particular about soil, provided drainage is suitable. Water while roots establish; Oregon State notes that established plants need limited or no irrigation in suitable conditions. The same source lists USDA zone 7. ## Maintenance Allow the shrub to keep its natural shape or prune selectively to control size. Avoid repeated heavy shearing when a loose, wildlife-friendly form is desired, and leave some fruit for birds through autumn.
