About Prairie Spire Green Ash

Prairie Spire® Green Ash is the narrow, seedless selection Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Rugby’, valued for its upright outline and autumn color. Its close canopy gives useful shade while taking less lateral room than many green ash trees. ## Landscape Use Use it as a street, boulevard, shelter, or specimen tree where a tall canopy is wanted in a relatively narrow space. North Dakota State University describes a narrowly erect tree that becomes pyramidal to elliptical with age, about 40–50 feet tall and 25 feet wide. A [regional nursery profile](https://www.coaldalenurseries.ca/?page_id=616&singleproduct=1218) lists it for shade, streets, medians, and windbreaks. ## Foliage and Placement Glossy green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn. The [NDSU cultivar profile](https://technologies.ndsuresearchfoundation.org/tech?title=Prairie_Spire%C2%AE_Green_Ash_-_Fraxinus_pennsylvanica_%E2%80%98Rugby%E2%80%99) gives USDA hardiness zone 3 and says it extends into zone 2b. Full sun is listed by the Coaldale nursery profile. ## Growing Conditions This northern selection is adapted to cold prairie conditions. Water new trees consistently while roots establish, then adjust irrigation to local rainfall and soil. A nursery reference describes drought tolerance once established. ## Maintenance Inspect the leader and branch structure as the tree grows. Follow the cultivar developer’s pruning guidance for competing leaders, and remove damaged branches with clean cuts. Its seedless habit avoids the usual samara litter associated with many ash trees.
