About Fuchsia

Fuchsia is a genus of flowering plants in the evening primrose family, grown for pendant flowers with colorful sepals and petals. The name covers species and hybrids with very different sizes and winter hardiness, so check the selected plant’s label before choosing its permanent position. ## Garden use and flowering Fuchsias work in hanging baskets, patio containers, sheltered borders and, for hardy shrub forms, informal hedges. Flowers come in combinations of white, pink, red, violet, purple, bluish and orange. Many garden selections flower from summer into autumn, while exact timing depends on the variety and local climate. The [RHS genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/fuchsia) shows the range of plant forms, and [San Diego Zoo’s Fuchsia profile](https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/plants/fuchsia) describes the varied species and flower colors. ## Siting and care Tender bedding forms are often grown in partial shade with evenly moist, well-drained organic soil. Hardy fuchsia shrubs can flower in full sun or partial shade; the [RHS hardy fuchsia guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/fuchsia/hardy/growing-guide) recommends a sheltered site and notes that very wet or dry soil is unsuitable. In containers, use a well-drained loam-based mix and water regularly during active growth. ## Maintenance For hardy shrubs, remove winter-killed stems in early spring and mulch around the crown. In colder gardens, some selections die back to the ground and regrow, while tender forms need frost protection or seasonal replacement. Prune according to the plant’s hardiness and growth habit rather than applying one size or winter-care rule to the whole genus.
