About Burgundy Blanket Flower

‘Burgundy’ blanket flower is a bushy, often short-lived perennial with deep wine-red ray flowers and yellow centers that darken as they age. It flowers from early summer into fall and suits sunny borders and cutting gardens. ## Garden Use Use it in a mixed perennial border or container where its warm flowers can be seen up close. Also known as ‘Burgunder’, it has red flower heads with yellow-tipped rays; the wine-red rays soften with age and the yellow center darkens ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/234000/gaillardia-%C3%97-grandiflora-burgunder/details), [Wisconsin Horticulture](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/blanket-flower-gaillardia-spp/)). Wisconsin gives a mature height of about 2–2.5 feet, displayed here as 24–30 inches. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. The Santa Fe Botanical Garden lists this selection for USDA zone 3 and recommends occasional deep watering after establishment ([Santa Fe Botanical Garden](https://santafebotanicalgarden.gardenexplorer.org/taxon-410.aspx)). ## Maintenance Water deeply but infrequently once established. Deadhead to prolong flowering, then cut back old stems in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
