Create design onlineAbout Gatsby Gal™ Oakleaf hydrangea
Gatsby Gal® is a compact oakleaf hydrangea selected as ‘Brenhill’, with abundant, large white flower panicles held above green leaves. Its 5–6-foot mature height and spread fit a smaller mixed border, foundation planting, informal hedge, or woodland garden. [Spring Meadow Nursery’s cultivar profile](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/gatsby-gal-40930) identifies the selection and lists its mature size, bloom, exposure, and landscape uses.
## Landscape Use
Plant Gatsby Gal as part of a mixed border or foundation planting, or use it in an informal hedge or screen. Its compact habit and large summer panicles suit smaller spaces while still giving the flowers room to rise above the foliage.
## Site and Seasonal Interest
Provide full sun or part sun and moist, well-drained soil; avoid persistently wet sites. Green summer foliage frames white flower panicles. Oakleaf hydrangeas can also bring fall color and exfoliating winter bark; see [NC State Extension’s species guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-quercifolia/) for the broader seasonal and site characteristics.
## Maintenance
Oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so avoid routine trimming that would remove next season’s flower buds. If shaping is needed, prune selectively just after flowering. Water during establishment and dry periods, keep the root zone evenly moist, and mulch to conserve moisture. The cultivar grower notes that Gatsby Gal may need winter protection in northern gardens.
