About New Day® Red Stripe Gazania

New Day® Red Stripe is a compact Gazania rigens selection identified by the breeder code PAS883190. Ball Seed lists an 8–10-inch height and 6–8-inch spread, with late-spring and summer flowering; the New Day series is bred for uniform bloom and compact, sturdy growth. ([Ball Seed](https://info.ballseed.com/PlantInfo/?phid=028106282004565)) ## Garden Use The low, mounded plant fits the front of a sunny border, a container, or a small edging or groundcover display. Its cultivar name identifies the red-striped flower form, while the series’ compact size keeps the color close to the ground. Give plants room for their 6–8-inch spread when arranging them in a group. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Ball Seed describes New Day as drought tolerant and recommends it for containers, baskets, garden edging, and groundcover; allow soil to dry somewhat between waterings and avoid waterlogged ground. Gazania flowers open in sunlight and close at night or in very cloudy weather. In cold-winter areas, gazanias are usually grown as seasonal annuals. ([UF/IFAS Extension](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP225); [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/gazania-rigens/)) ## Maintenance Remove faded flower heads to encourage more blooms and keep the planting tidy. Water when the soil has dried and allow excess water to drain. Ball Seed classifies the New Day selection as low maintenance.
