About Silkyleaf Broom

Silkyleaf broom (Genista pilosa) is a low, spreading shrub with fine hairs on its green stems and small leaves that are green above and silvery beneath. In spring and summer, golden-yellow, pea-shaped flowers appear along the branch tips. ## Garden use Use this European native as a groundcover for sunny slopes, rock gardens, and dry borders. Its prostrate growth can help cover open soil, and the foliage offers fine texture when the plant is not in bloom. ## Growing conditions Provide full sun and sharply drained, sandy or stony soil. North Carolina State Extension describes mature plants about 12 to 18 inches tall and up to 3 feet wide, with USDA hardiness zones 5a through 8b. Drought tolerance develops after establishment; the plant can struggle in hot, humid conditions. ## Maintenance Trim lightly to shape, and avoid cutting into old woody stems. Watch for aphids or spider mites, and provide open air movement where humidity is high.
