About Dalmatian Hardy Geranium

Geranium dalmaticum, the Dalmatian cranesbill, is a small, cushion-forming perennial with scalloped leaves and pink flowers. Plant Select describes plants about 6–8 inches tall and wide, flowering in late spring to early summer; the foliage can develop red tones in late summer and autumn. [Plant Select profile](https://plantselect.org/plantstories/the-ground-cover-geranium/) [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/7871/geranium-dalmaticum/details) ## Garden Use Use this compact species near the front of a sunny or lightly shaded border, in a rock garden, or as a small-scale groundcover beneath shrubs. It prefers well-drained loam or sandy soil, where its low mound can fill gaps without obscuring neighboring plants. The RHS recognizes it as a rock-garden type and lists the species in its Award of Garden Merit resources. ## Maintenance Water new plants until established and avoid persistently wet soil. Remove spent flowers or tired leaves to keep the mound tidy, and divide established plants when needed to renew or increase them.
