Create design onlineAbout Johnson's Blue Hardy Geranium
Johnson's Blue is a clump-forming hardy geranium with large lavender-blue flowers above deeply divided green leaves. The accepted RHS name is Geranium × johnsonii 'Johnson's Blue'; it suits sunny or partly shaded borders where its spring-to-fall bloom and spreading foliage can soften edges. ## Garden use and flowering
The Chicago Botanic Garden describes plants about 18 inches tall and 2–3 feet wide, a useful footprint for a border front or informal groundcover. Violet-blue flowers begin in late spring and may continue into early fall, with timing shifting by climate. The rounded seed capsules that follow retain the characteristic cranesbill form.
## Site and water
Grow in full sun or partial shade. A fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil supports steady growth; provide deep watering during dry spells, especially in the first season. Give the clump room to spread and avoid a persistently waterlogged site.
## Maintenance
After the main flush, remove flowered stems or trim untidy growth to refresh the mound and sometimes prompt another flush. Divide crowded plants in spring. Cut back old foliage when it looks worn, leaving healthy new growth intact.
